FAQ
COMMON QUESTIONS
CBD is short for cannabidiol—one of the main cannabinoids that can be extracted from the hemp plant.
CBD works with the endocannabinoid system to help regulate the body, promote homeostasis, and support health and wellness.
Cannabinoids are molecules naturally produced by humans, plants, and animals that work in harmony with the endocannabinoid system. Scientists have currently identified over 100 cannabinoids, with more being discovered every year. Cannabinoids produced by plants are known as phytocannabinoids, while cannabinoids produced endogenously in the body are called endocannabinoids.
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex network of neurotransmitters and receptors that serves as a regulation system for the body. The ECS helps regulate many biologic functions and systems, promoting homeostasis in the body.
The bioavailability of CBD (how your body breaks down and absorbs the cannabinoid) differs with different forms and delivery methods. Researchers are continually learning more about the pharmacokinetics of CBD and other cannabinoids.
CBD is a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid extracted from the hemp plant that has been shown to support balance and regulation in the body. CBD does not produce a “high” the way that THC does. THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid molecule that is extracted from the marijuana plant. THC and CBD are both well-known cannabinoids, but they have very different effects on the body.
Transparency, safety, and traceability are at the heart of everything we do at Avient Biosciences. We provide our clients with access to all of the COAs (Certificates of Analysis) from a certified third party lab for every product that leaves our facility. We internally test our production inputs and outputs at every stage; from start to finish products may see six or more points of quality control testing. Our ability to test at every stage allows us to identify areas for optimization and ensure product quality throughout our production process.
CBD is a non-toxic natural substance extracted from the hemp plant, and there is no record of any lethal overdoses of CBD. Just like with any ingested substance, excessively high doses may cause adverse effects such as drowsiness or nausea.
All of our products are free of wheat, gluten, crustacean shellfish, eggs, fish, peanuts, dairy products, tree nuts, soybeans, and sulfites. In addition, there are no animal derived materials, making our products vegan-friendly.
We recommend storing CBD products stored in a cool and dry place protected from UV light. Any UV rays, even indirect, can cause cannabinoids and terpenes to oxidize and degrade over time.
ABOUT AVERIX BIO
FACILITY
Located on 36 acres, our 200,000 square foot headquarters includes our state of the art extraction facility, based in Wilson, North Carolina.
We encourage our partners and clients to visit the Averix Bio extraction and processing campus. We are always eager to show visitors the measures we are taking to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of every product that moves through our facility.
Our food and pharmaceutical grade facility follows all current good manufacturing practices.
cGMP refers to the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations enforced by the FDA. Adhering to cGMPs ensures that manufacturing processes and facilities use proper design, monitoring, and control protocols, and safeguards the identity, strength, quality, and purity of drug products. A manufacturer that is cGMP compliant will have strong quality management systems, rigorous operational testing, high quality raw materials, and reliable testing laboratories.
HEMP
Averix Bio proudly partners with independent American family farmers with generations of experience. With over 400 acres of rich farmland planted with Averix Bio sourced genetics, North Carolina is turning out some of the highest quality hemp in the world.
Third party labs test our hemp samples for pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, as well as THC, terpene profile, and CBD concentration.
TEAM
We have brought together a diverse team of experts all under one roof. Our extraction team is composed of thought-leaders with deep expertise across the pharmaceutical and medical cannabis space. Our formulation team brings decades of experience leading product development and innovation at some of the biggest consumer products manufacturing companies in the world. Our quality assurance team benefits from decades of leadership in highly regulated research and industry environments. Averix Bio’s talent pool also includes data scientists, logistics experts, and a manufacturing management team who lead our tracking and work-in-process efforts that have years of experience in cGMP pharma-grade manufacturing facilities.
PROCESSING
Extraction Process:
We use the cryo-ethanol extraction method because it is the purest, safest, and most efficient way to extract cannabinoids from the hemp plant.
Winterization removes lipids, fats, and waxes that can dilute the crude extract. Our cryo-ethanol extraction method ensures winterization during the extraction process and produces a premium quality crude extract end product.
Distillation Process:
Our crude is distilled through a continuous filter system. This method efficiently and consistently separates terpenes, chlorophyll, flavonoids, other lipids and plant by-products. The removal of these components delivers a consistent and pure full spectrum CBD distillate.
Yes. All distillation processes remove terpenes. Averix Bio is able to add naturally derived plant and cannabis terpenes back post distillation.
A traditional process is used to remove all the active compounds from the cannabis plant, followed by a refinement process that strips away all other phytocannabinoids, including THC, and any plant matter, leaving behind nothing but the CBD compound in its purest and most concentrated form.
MANUFACTURING & FINISHED GOODS
R&D and Custom formulations:
Yes, we have an in-house analytical testing laboratory to confirm the products we produce meet Certificate of Analysis (COA) specs and conduct R&D for future products.
Bulk Ingredients:
We refer to our crude oil as Full Spectrum Whole Plant Oil. We call it whole plant oil because we use the entire hemp plant and maintain as much of the integrity of the plant in this ingredient as possible.
Full Spectrum Distillate is a further refinement from our full spectrum whole plant oil. Through the distillation process we lose some flavonoids, chlorophyll, and some minor terpenes but are left with 80-90% CBD—with the rest being other minor cannabinoids including THC. THC is most commonly known as the psychoactive cannabinoid found in Marjuana, however when formulating with full spectrum distillate final products are left with <0.03% THC (the legal limit) and it is rare to have psychoactive effects from this trace amount. The combination of CBD and these other minor cannabinoids leads to an “entourage effect” where the efficacy of the product is improved through the synergistic combination of the components.
Broad spectrum THC free distillate goes through a proprietary process to remove the THC. Our broad spectrum THC free distillate is similar to our full spectrum distillate except we have refined it further to remove all amounts of THC below a level detection in rigorous third party lab testing. While the THC in full spectrum distillate does not have psychoactive effects, some clients and consumers do not want even trace amounts of THC in their final products. Broad spectrum THC free distillate has 80-90% CBD.
CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD with 99% CBD content. Everything is stripped out except for the CBD so as to ensure the highest potency and purest form of CBD isolate.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
Hemp:
We perform mid-season hemp testing in the field for every farmer. Once the hemp is delivered at the end of the season we homogenize samples for third party lab testing. We also test the hemp in house before we begin processing to track quality and yield during extraction.
We test our fields for 50 known pesticides.
We test every field to make sure there are no heavy metals and toxins contaminating the water source.
Work-In-Process & Finished Goods:
We test our product at every stage during processing to ensure quality and safety for every batch. In addition, we test every finished good with a third party before it leaves our facility.
Yes, we offer third-party tests for all finished products.
